WHS Marching Band and Director receive Recognition
WHS Band Director Jill Brooks holds an award from a band competition.

The Weddington High School Marching Band has been very busy.  Since the beginning of August band members have spent many hours outside in the hot sun practicing and preparing for the upcoming season.  Being a marching band member involves both musical and physical training.  Members must to able to march in military fashion while carrying and playing their instrument at the same time.

The many hours of practice are paying off so far this school year.  First, the band was recognized in the September issue of Appleseed Magazine.  This issue was dedicated to the Power of Music.  The WHS Marching Band was highlighted in a three page spread about the hard work and fun required in a high school marching band.

Second, WHS band director Jill Brooks was selected as the recipient of the 2013-2014 American School Band Directors Association Outstanding Potential Award.  This award is a national honor designed to recognize young band directors who have achieved a high level of teaching excellence early in their careers through strong work ethic, quality instruction, professional demeanor and musical passion. There may only be one recipient per state, and only a few are awarded throughout the entire country.  Mrs. Brooks was presented the award on September 21st during the Union County Marching Band Preview.
