JROTC takes top honors

On April 10, Weddington High’s Marine Corps JROTC Drill Team and Color Guard competed in the annual Union County Drill Competition held at the US Army National Guard Armory in Monroe.

The event which was hosted and graded by members of the local National Guard brought together all high schools in Union County with ROTC programs to compete in drill and color guard competitions.

Weddington’s JROTC program in its first year of existence took top honors in the county in the Color Guard and Armed Squad competitions.

Additionally, Weddington fielded highly competitive entries in the Unarmed Squad and Individual Drill competitions.

Weddington’s Color Guard was led by Sergeant Dale Funderburk.

The Armed Squad competed under the direction of Cadet Frankie Grippo.

Cadet Lucas Brown led the Unarmed Squad.

Cadets Carson Glatz and Hank Bowers represented Weddington in the individual drill competition.

The Drill Team and Color Guard plan on leveraging their experiences from this year and carry their positive momentum into next fall’s drill season.
